چکیده

[1] Flow path delineation is a valuable tool for interpreting the subsurface hydrogeochemical environment. Different types of data, such as groundwater flow and transport, inform different aspects of hydrogeologic parameter values (hydraulic conductivity in this case) which, in turn, determine flow paths. This work combines flow and transport information to estimate a unified set of hydrogeologic parameters using the Bayesian geostatistical inverse approach. Parameter flexibility is allowed by using a highly parameterized approach with the level of complexity informed by the data. Despite the effort to adhere to the ideal of minimal a priori structure imposed on the problem, extreme contrasts in parameters can result in the need to censor correlation across hydrostratigraphic bounding surfaces. These partitions segregate parameters into facies associations. With an iterative approach in which partitions are based on inspection of initial estimates, flow path interpretation is progressively refined through the inclusion of more types of data. Head observations, stable oxygen isotopes (O/O ratios), and tritium are all used to progressively refine flow path delineation on an isthmus between two lakes in the Trout Lake watershed, northern Wisconsin, United States. Despite allowing significant parameter freedom by estimating many distributed parameter values, a smooth field is obtained.

تخمین پارامترهای هیدرولیکی خاک‌های دارای اشباع‌شدگی متغیر به‌‌روش مدل سازی معکوس و بهره‌گیری از داده‌های توزیع مجدد رطوبت

Modeling of flow and transport processes in variably saturated porous media requires detailed knowledge of the soil hydraulic properties. The hydraulic properties to be determined by the inverse problem solution are the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity K(h) and the water retention curve θ(h). The inverse modeling approach assumes that both θ(h) and K(h) as well as transport parame...

Development and application of a coupled-process parameter inversion model based on the maximum likelihood estimation method

The coupled ̄ow-mass transport inverse problem is formulated using the maximum likelihood estimation concept. An evolutionary computational algorithm, the genetic algorithm, is applied to search for a global or near-global solution. The resulting inverse model allows for ̄ow and transport parameter estimation, based on inversion of spatial and temporal distributions of head and concentration meas...

An iterative geostatistical inverse method for steady flow in the vadose zone

An iterative geostatistical inverse approach is developed to estimate conditional effective unsaturated hydraulic conductivity parameters, soil-water pressure head, and degree of saturation in heterogeneous vadose zones. This approach is similar to the classical cokriging technique, and it uses a linear estimator that depends on covariances and cross covariances of unsaturated hydraulic paramet...

A modified Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm for quasi-linear geostatistical inversing

The Quasi-Linear Geostatistical Approach is a method of inverse modeling to identify parameter fields, such as the hydraulic conductivity in heterogeneous aquifers, given observations of related quantities like hydraulic heads or arrival times of tracers. Derived in the Bayesian framework, it allows to rigorously quantify the uncertainty of the identified parameter field. Since inverse modeling...

Probabilistic inference of multi-Gaussian fields from indirect hydrological data using circulant embedding and dimensionality reduction

We present a Bayesian inversion method for the joint inference of high-dimensional multiGaussian hydraulic conductivity fields and associated geostatistical parameters from indirect hydrological data. We combine Gaussian process generation via circulant embedding to decouple the variogram from grid cell specific values, with dimensionality reduction by interpolation to enable Markov chain Monte...
